Apprenticeships – Are they right for you?

By May 21, 2018No Comments

At RedSeven, we love working with individuals who are eager to learn and excited to expand their skill set, working with apprentices and interns therefore, is incredible. In most cases, in our experience, the individual is a little nervous to begin with, this quite often being their first place of work, but it is wonderful to see their confidence build as their knowledge and capabilities grow.

We wanted to find out what it’s like from the perspective of the apprentice or intern themselves, so we’ve asked Aimee, our Business Marketing Apprentice, for her side of the story. Here’s what she had to say!

Welcome Aimee!

3 months ago I was sat in college not knowing what I wanted to do in the future… I just knew college wasn’t the route for me!

A month later I started my apprenticeship – 3rd January 2018 – it was the best decision I have ever made, and have now found the right path for me to be able to do what I want in the future. Since I sat my first business lesson, I knew that Marketing and Business were the areas I wanted to work in; they were, and still are, my favourite subjects. I just wasn’t sure how to get my foot in the door.

I started my apprenticeship with an open mind as I knew it was going to be a massive adjustment for my life; having being used to starting college at 12pm and finishing at 3pm, working a 9 – 5 role was a massive change. I’ve never had a routine before, but I was more than ready to start my workplace education, it felt a more valuable use of my time to actually be in the action, instead of looking at it from a theoretical standpoint. My apprenticeship has changed me as a person and I couldn’t be happier with my progress. I feel much more independent and confident in my ability, doing things I never would have thought I’d be doing at the age of 16.

I am proud of how far I have come; from being sat in a college classroom knowing that I was only there because I had to be, to then being sat at a desk of my own, doing something I have only ever dreamed of doing. After two months with RedSeven, I’m more confident and independently taking on responsibilities, having the freedom to mould my own learning. Some of my current duties are assisting with invoices, inputting daily figures, social media, organising events and some PA tasks. If there’s something else I’d like to learn how to do or get involved with though, all I need to do is ask.

This is going to open so many doors for me and really help me progress in the future. I feel as though I have made the best decision for me and recommend taking any apprenticeship opportunity that you’re given. RedSeven have given me a great opportunity to progress to the best level I can. I wish I had thought about taking on an apprenticeship sooner, but am glad to have found it now. It’s really upped my potential of becoming the best person I can be.

It is such a pleasure to read the encouraging words from Aimee and know how positively her apprenticeship is affecting her. With university fees only increasing, we believe the option of apprenticeships and internships could be the way forward for lots of young people; traditional education methods aren’t for everybody, but ‘on the job training’ could fill the gap for many.
