Why you shouldn’t be scared of Commissions

By May 21, 2018No Comments

What if you had the opportunity to earn more, save more, and hit more goals without having to sacrifice something? Got an event you want to attend next month but know you won’t have the money to buy the ticket? All your friends going on holiday but there’s no way you could justify putting it on your credit card? Sometimes commissions are the only way to get what you want, when you want it…

Working on commission can be a daunting prospect, ‘not knowing’ exactly what you’ll earn this month is enough to put some people off giving it a go and seeing what’s possible, but it’s also extremely exciting, and empowering, to know this month is what you make it…

Rent v Mortgage

Being employed could be compared to renting; you do what’s asked of you, pay your rent and receive a roof over your head for that month – fair swap right? Being self-employed however, working on commission essentially, is more like having a mortgage; you pay it off, bit by bit, working toward owning the property, attaining your asset. It allows you to build your own future rather than someone else’s.

What people sometimes fail to realise is the potential working on commission can have. Commissions allow you to earn more, challenge mindset and capabilities, but also work for your worth/value.

In the world of salaries and hourly pay, you get paid a fixed amount. Do the bare minimum, clock-in and clock-out on the dot? Your payslip won’t change (until you most probably get fired that is). Go above and beyond your duties, work harder than your co-workers? Your payslip won’t change either (until you’re fed up of being undervalued and resign that is). With commissions, if you do more than the person sat next to you, you’ll earn more than the person sat next to you, it’s as simple as that. Commissions reward results, you earn what you deserve and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Commissions aren’t for everybody, but if you’re ambitious, motivated and a fan of self-development, you could be doing yourself an injustice by not considering them.

Who inspires you?

Every single person who is self-employed, freelance or owns their own company works on commission. Is it those people who generally become successful and have inspiring stories to tell? Yes. Inspiring tales may start with, “I was working a 9-5 role, hating each Monday morning’, but we can almost guarantee they didn’t stay employed and restricted to their salary. There would have been a “light bulb moment” that lead them to follow their aspirations, take the plunge and make something of themselves.

Gary Vaynerchuck, entrepreneur, internet personality – an account we’d highly recommend following on Instagram – is currently worth $160 million. How did he start out? Selling baseball cards at 11 years old to his peers. Commissions have allowed him not only the freedom to reach his goals, but the skills to inspire, motivate and succeed.

Mark Cuban, founder of the company broadcast.com, an internet radio company that sold to Yahoo! for $5.7 billion in 1999, and now own’s the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. His first income stream? Selling bin bags door-to-door. Do you think he ever settled for a salary someone else thought he was worth?

People aren’t born successful, they all start somewhere, all make sacrifices of some sort, and all give themselves the opportunity to ‘Be More’ by taking risks.

What if it wasn’t a choice?

The most inspiring people are often the ones with the most difficult stories; rough background, poor upbringing, poverty, whichever it is, the need to create their own money is what drove them to an entrepreneurial lifestyle; they had to, they had no choice. For the majority of people however, money can be more of an easy-come-easy-go phenomenon – we work 5 days a week, receive our monthly income and pay our bills, there’s not necessarily a necessity to break the mould.

What if your need wasn’t a circumstance, but a goal, or a dream? You don’t have to have faced dire circumstances to give yourself a chance to earn what you deserve, become who you want to be and achieve what you know you can.

If you never try you’ll never know, and what’s worse than regret?…
